Finem Respice
Our motto, “Finem Respice” (pronounced “FEE-nem res-PEE-kay”), has been handed down to us by the surveyors who came before us in this practice. It means “consider the end or the outcome; look to the limits—perhaps even look to the boundaries.” It applies especially to our line of work, but, when rightly considered, it applies to most areas of life.

Our Practice

Our extensive experience both in ancient surveying records and practices and in the modern technology available to surveyors today gives us a special ability to serve the needs of our landowner clients.

We take pride in our thorough searching of survey chains of title and in the production of clear and accurate survey plans for the use of our clients and their legal counsel.

Historic Richards, Cranston and Chapman land and forestry consultants banner
A Midcoast Maine practice grounded in generations of field experience.

The practice and experience of our surveyors extends back from the days of tape, transit and compass surveys and into the modern day use of laser distance measuring, computer drafting, Global Positioning Systems and the GIS technologies of the present day.

From Then to Now

We honor the traditions of our craft while embracing the precision of modern technology.

Time-Honored Methods

Our roots run deep into the history of the profession. We are versed in the interpretation of ancient records, the reading of compass and transit surveys, and the time-tested practices of chain measurement. This historical fluency allows us to resolve boundary questions that modern tools alone cannot answer.

Modern Precision

We deploy laser distance measuring, advanced computer drafting, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to deliver surveys of the highest accuracy. This marriage of old-world knowledge and new-world precision defines the caliber of our work.
